Something that’s bugging me (2)

Disclaimer: this is a personal rant and not meant to insult anyone. Just my random thoughts on a little slice of internet life that bothers me.

I’m pretty sure everyone has a facebook friend like this. They spend their entire life posting about how much they miss their significant other, getting mushy and lovey dovey with every single status update, photo, or comment. Ok, loving each other is all well and good. Wonderful really. But when every single thing you post or say or do is tied to him or her, then it’s as if you define yourself by your relationship.

That’s part of the reason I wrote this post a few weeks back. Love is grand. Relationships can be wonderful, enriching things, but I don’t think any relationship should define who you are. Only you can do that, and if you let another person consume and define your identity, they can take it from you.

I’m not saying that you shouldn’t date or fall in love. I’m saying that you should define your relationship, rather than letting your relationship define you.

I may not be the best person to offer relationship advice but…there you go. And now I’m done.

This is more than a law of modern man. This should be a law of modern life. People who go through life thinking they are meaningless until they find love are just caught in an endless spiral. You can’t possibly find love if it is your only purpose in life: you have to become someone worthy of love by chasing your dreams, achieving goals, and growing into the person and purpose you were meant to be. You have to find your own song and love the way it sounds before you can turn it into a duet. Figure out the solo part first, then add in the harmony. If you do that, and your harmony drops away, the solo part will be strong enough to carry on.
